Pioneers Season Ends In The AMCC Tournament

Cresson, PA- The Alfred State baseball team season comes to a close in the AMCC Championship Tournament. PS Behrend took the first game of the day 15-4, then La Roche won 13-6. The Pioneers ended the year with an 18-25 record.

Game One

Jon White got the start on the hill and suffered a loss. Joshua Gardner went 1-3, with his lone hit being a homerun with two RBIs.

After a scoreless first inning, Tyler Petery led off the second inning with a single to right center. Caleb Walker followed with walk, before Connor Kiefer notched an RBI single through the left side for the 1-0 lead. After a sacrifice bunt advanced the runners, Devin Mersmann came away with an RBI on a sacrifice fly for the 2-0 lead.

The Lions answered with a run in the third and four runs in the fifth to take the lead. The Pioneers would cut the gap to 5-4 with two runs in the top of the seventh. Anthony Snyder led off the inning with a single up the middle. Two batters later, Gardner notched a two run blast over the center field fence to make it a 5-4 game.

PS Behrend had a big bottom half of the seventh inning scoring nine runs  to take control of the game and secure the win.

 

Game two

Kiefer went 2-4 with three RBIs and a stolen base, while Jack Curabba went 2-3 at the plate. Christopher Mattoon suffered the loss after he tallied five strikeouts.

The Red Hawks got on the board first and scored four runs in the first five innings to take a 4-0 lead. Alfred State would tie the game with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Jack Curabba led off with a single to center field. Petery would get walked and Walker reached on an error to load the bases. Kiefer then stepped to the plate and came away with a two RBI single to make it a 4-2 game. Two batters later, Mersmann notched an RBI single. Both Mersmann and Kiefer stole a base, and an RBI groundout from Gardner tied the game at 4-4.

Following a rain delay, the Red Hawks scored two runs to take a 6-4 lead. The Pios answered with – runs of their own. Tyler Korsky reached on an error then, Curabba notched a single to put runners on the corners. Then Petery got an RBI on fielder's choice to make it a 6-5 game. Walker followed with a walk, and Kiefer notched an RBI single to left field to tie the game at 6-6.

In the next few innings, La Roche scored seven runs to take a 13-6 lead and secure the win.
