Pioneers Honor Seniors; Sweep Conference Games

The Alfred State Baseball team swept the double header from Mt. Aloysious to remain in first place in the AMCC standing. With 6-5 and 12-1 wins, the Pioneers are now 9-1 in conference play. Before first pitch, the Alfred State team honored 9 seniors.

In Game 1:

The Pioneers came out firing with the bats in the first inning, Sam Dickerson got the game started with a 2 run blast. Then 2 batters later Nick Serce continued his dominant season with a solo shot to make the score 3-0. In the 3rd inning, Elijah Barinas singled and drove in Tim Holler to make the score 4-0 Pioneers. Mt. Aloysius scored 1 run in the topof the 4th. In the bottom of the 4th, Bryson Rigsby hit a sac fly to score Owen Lansing to make the game 5-1. Mt Aloysius started a comeback and scored 3 runs in the top of the fifth inning. In the bottom half, Gavin Moore singled to score Nick Serce and make it a 6-4 game, which ended up being the winning run. Starter Ryan Bailey had a strong outing for the Pioneers, going 5.2 innings and striking out 8 batters. First-year reliever, Caden Fortunato shut the door for the Pioneers getting the last 4 outs of the game. Sealing the deal for a crucial Pioneer win.

Sam Dickerson went 2-4 with a HR and a Double and 2 RBIs

In Game 2:

The game was scoreless for the first 2 innings, as both teams exchanged impressive defensive plays. Mt. Aloysious got the scoring going in top of the third inning, making the score 1-0. That run would wind up being the only run that Mt. Aloysius. The Pioneers answered right away in the bottom of the third scoring 4 runs, Elijah Barinas, Gavin Moore and Owen Lansing all hit RBI singles in the inning. The hot bats for the Pioneers continued for the rest of the game as the scoring never stopped. 3 more runs came across in the bottom of the fifth inning, with a 2 run double by Sam Dickerson and a single by Jack Curraba. In the 8th inning Nick Serce hit another mammoth home run that cleared the center field wall.  Owen Lansing hit a laser double down the line to score Elijah Barinas which would wind up being the winning run as the Pioneers mercy ruled Mt. Aloysius as the game ended 12-1. Starter Chris Mattoon had a stellar performance as he went the complete game only giving up 1 earned run as the Pioneers played perfect defense behind him.

Owen Lansing went 3-5 with 2 RBIs

The Pioneers are back in action at home on Tuesday as they take on Penn St Behrend in an AMCC double header, with game 1 starting at 1:00 at Pioneer Field.
