Pioneers Win Wild One Over Keuka

The Alfred State baseball team won a wild 13-12 contest vs. Keuka on Tuesday afternoon. The contest featured 25 runs, 31 hits, and 11 pitchers.

Keuka jumped out to an early lead with five runs in the 1st inning. They made it 6-0 with a run in the 2nd before the Pioneers cut the lead in half with three in the bottom of the inning. Connor Pingitore (Amsterdam/Broadalbin Perth) scored on a fielding error, Mike Gibson (Schenectady) had a RBI ground out, and Andy Pichardo (Queens/Academy of American Studies) capped the inning with a RBI single.

The Wolves scored a pair in the 4th and another in the 5th to make it 9-3. In the bottom of the 5th, Colin Johnson (Alfred Almond), Pingitore, and Tim Holler (Brewster) collected RBI singles to cut the lead to 9-6. In the 6th, Alfred State took their first lead of the game. Danny Doran (Irondequoit) had a RBI single, Johnson followed with another RBI single, and Pingitore tied it up with his third hit of the game to plate Samuel Dickerson (Cutchogue/Mattituck). Dan Woodward (Honeoye) gave the lead when he delivered a pinch hit two-run double to make it 11-9.

The Wolves didn't fade away as they scored three of their own in the 7th to regain the lead, 12-11. Doran tied it up with two outs in the bottom of the 7th when he sent a long homer over the left field fence. Jarrod Deaton (Newburgh Free) retired Keuka in order in the 8th sending the Pioneers up to bat looking to score the winning run. Holler drew a lead-off walk, went to second on a sac bunt, and with two outs scored when he scored on a throwing error after advancing to third on a wild pitch.

Deaton made the 13-12 lead stand and the Pioneers earned the win to improve to 12-11 on the year. The blue & gold have now six of their last seven games.

The 2-3-4-5 portion of the Alfred State batting order finished 11 for 20. Johnson and Pingitore were each 3 for 5 with 2 RBI while Dickerson was 3 for 5 with a pair of runs scored. Doran was 2 for 5 with 2 RBI including his 5th homer of the season.

Deaton pitched the final 2.2 innings of the game and earned the victory. He allowed two hits and one run while walking one and striking out three. 

The Pioneers are back in action tomorrow when they travel to D'Youville as they return to AMCC play. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
