Atlanta, GA- The Alfred State men's lacrosse team picked up their third straight win in a tough road matchup against Oglethorpe, 17-11. The Pioneers improve to 3-4 on the season.
Matthew Bridges led the way offensively with four goals and four assists with three caused turnovers.
Joseph Tiberio followed suit with four goals of his own and two assists while scooping up four ground balls.
Brendon O'Donnell contributed two goals and three helpers while picking up nine ground balls.
Payton Bliss picked up the win between the pipes stopping eight of 18 shots on goal.
Alfred State was able to get a quick 2-0 lead just six minuities into the game with the help of Tiberio and Bridges. Although, the Petrels answered back with two goals of their own to tie the game with 5:59 left in the first. Tiberio's second of the night gave the Pios momentum as they took a 3-2 lead into the second.
ASC started off the second quarter with five unanswered goals from Tiberio, Bridges,
Mike Coburn,
Ryan Batson, and
Joseph Pritchard to increase their lead to 8-2 with 4:48 left in the half. Oglethorpe went on a three-goal run of their own, but The Pioneers responded with two late ones from Bridges and
Griffin Doan, making it 11-5 Alfred State at the half.
The Pioneers continued to build their lead in the third quarter with a strong offensive stretch. Bridges opened the scoring before Oglethorpe briefly answered, but the Pioneers responded with back-to-back goals just 10 seconds apart from O'Donnell and
Ryan Batson to swing momentum, 13-6.
Cameron Chase later finished an assist from Bridges, and Doan converted on a man-up opportunity from O'Donnell, making the lead 15-8. The Petrels added a late push with multiple goals, but Tiberio capped the quarter with a goal off a Bridges assist to keep Alfred State comfortably in front heading into the fourth, 16-10. Both teams could only add one goal to their totals in the fourth as the Pios closed the game out, winning 17-11.
The Pioneers return to action on Wednesday, March 18
th as they continue on the road at Keuka College for a 4pm start.
