Alfred, NY – The Alfred State men's lacrosse team fell to cross-town rival Alfred University 25-7 on Wednesday afternoon, dropping their record to 0-2 on the season.
Griffin Doan led the Pioneers offensively with two goals on seven shots while adding two ground balls.
Brady Nugent was efficient, scoring twice on two shots and collecting a team-high eight ground balls. In net,
Matthew Burris made 20 saves on 45 shots on goal in the loss.
The Saxons came out firing, overwhelming the Pioneers early with relentless pressure and efficient finishing. Alfred University built an 8-0 lead by the end of the first quarter and carried that momentum into the second.
Mike Coburn snapped the scoring drought for Alfred State with 2:17 remaining in the half, netting his first goal of the season, but the Pioneers trailed 16-1 at the break.
AU continued its surge to open the second half before Nugent capitalized in transition, finishing off a quick break for his second goal of the contest. Later in the third quarter, Alfred State showed resilience, stringing together three straight goals from
Richard Andres, Doan, and
Matthew Bridges to cut the deficit to 21-5 with 5:18 remaining in the frame. Nugent and Doan each added another tally, but the Saxons secured the Alfred Cup victory, 25-7.
The Pioneers will look to regroup on Saturday, February 28th, when they host SUNY Poly for a 12 p.m. faceoff.
