Alfred, NY - The Alfred State men's basketball team fell to visiting Pitt-Greensburg, 74-55, on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Pioneers dropped to 5-13 overall and 3-6 in AMCC play.
Darius Cunningham Jr. led Alfred State offensively with 14 points and two rebounds. Mykell Lawson followed with 13 points, while Kennyh Hardeman recorded a double-double, pulling down 14 rebounds and adding 12 points.
The Pioneers kept the game close early, trailing just 11-10 within the first six minutes as Cunningham Jr. and Lawson scored key baskets. Pitt-Greensburg slowly built momentum, but Lawson knocked down a three-pointer with 22 seconds remaining in the half to give Alfred State a boost heading into halftime, trailing 41-30.
In the second half, Cunningham Jr. and Lawson opened the scoring with layups to cut the deficit to 10 points three minutes in. However, Pitt-Greensburg responded by extending its lead as the half progressed, and the Pioneers were unable to close the gap, falling 74-55.
Alfred State will look to bounce back at home against Penn State Behrend on Wednesday, January 28. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
