Hackettstown, NJ- The Alfred State men's lacrosse team picked up the win in the season opener against Centenary, 15-10. The Pioneers are 1-0 to start the season.
Griffin Doan led the Pioneers with a haul (four goals) and two assists. Jesse Young and Mike Wojcik both tallied hat tricks with three goals and an assist each. Brendon O'Donnell added two goals and two assists. In the net, Matthew Burris took the win with seven saves.
Doan got the game started with back-to-back goals to give the Pioneers the 2-0 lead. The Cyclones rallied to take the 3-2 lead. Wojcik answered with a goal off of a Simon Busch pass to tie the game with four seconds left in the first.
The Pios netted seven goals in to second to take a commanding 10-5 lead in the halftime break. Alfred State opened the second with four straight goals to take a 7-3 lead. After a Cyclones goal, Wojcik scored an unassisted goal with two minutes left in the quarter. Following another Centenary goal, Mike Coburn and Young netted back-to-back goals for the 10-5 lead.
The Pioneers were able to maintain their five-goal lead in the second to come out victorious. The Pioneers will head across the road for a game against AU on Wednesday February 26, at 5 pm.
