Altoona, PA- Alfred State women's basketball incurred a loss against the Lions 68-49. After the loss, the Pioneers fell to 6-17 on the season.

Sarah Somers led the way for Alfred tallying 19 points along with seven boards. Jordan Niles came behind her adding 12 points while staying sharp on defense with three steals. Anna Merry and Josie Barton combined for 17 boards also.

The first quarter saw a lot of back-and-forth from both teams. Niles was the first to score for the Pios as she tallied a layup. Barton then went on to knock down a triple three minutes into the action. Moreover, Niles continued her dominance as she dropped in a fast break layup off a steal. After some time, Erin Mitchell hit a jumper to tie the game 9-9 before the second quarter.

The Pioneers had a rough second quarter, so they were looking to have a better second half.

Kicking off the third quarter, Somers made one of her first baskets just two minutes in. Taylor Searle also provided a contribution by hitting a triple to close off the quarter 49-23, Pios trailing.

The fourth quarter started strong for Alfred. Somers hit two consecutive layups along with a free throw. Searle then followed up with her own basket at 7:18.

As the Pioneers continued to try and bridge the gap, Kirsten Merritt hit a shot from behind the arc along with Somers dropping three more buckets. The lead was brought down to 16 with under three minutes remaining. However, the Pioneers fell short 68-49.

Pioneers will be home on Wednesday, February 19 to face off against Penn St. Behrend at 7pm.
