Alfred, NY- Alfred State women's basketball took a loss to the Panthers 84-60. After the loss, Pios move to 6-15 on the season, 5-7 in conference play.
Sarah Somers dominated for the Pioneers with 21 points and 9 rebounds while Anna Merry notched 14 points with 7 boards. Taylor Searle and Jordan Niles were active on the defensive end with three steals each.
Pioneers had a slow first quarter as they trailed for most of the action. Merry knocked down a shot from deep to help the Pioneers find some momentum. Niles also tallied a lay in before the quarter ended.
Jenna George put the Pioneers on the board in the second quarter just three minutes in. After some time, Merry hit her second triple of the game to bring a score of 30-18, Panthers' lead.
With two minutes to go before the half, Alfred began to see a spark. Merry, George, and Niles all put in a layup within the span of a minute.
Somers came alive in the first couple minutes of the third as she dropped four straight buckets for Alfred. Her hot hand shortened the gap to just within ten, 46-36. Pioneers continued to see some more contributions from Somers as they fought to het back in the game. However, Alfred fell short as they lost 84-60.
Pios will face of next against Penn St. Altoona next. Tip off will begin Saturday, February 15 at 3pm in Altoona, PA.
