Pioneers Capture First Win of Season in Crossbar Classic

Alfred, NY — The Alfred State women's basketball team secured their first win of the season in their second Crossbar Classic matchup, defeating the Bard Raptors 59–45. The Pioneers improve to 1–2 on the year.

Jordan Niles led the way with a standout performance, posting 14 points, six steals, and six rebounds. Emeline Barton added nine points, seven rebounds, and six steals, while Sarah Somers contributed nine points and six boards.

The opening quarter was a back-and-forth battle, but the Pioneers gained the edge late thanks to an Anna Merry three-pointer and two clutch free throws from Barton, giving ASC a 15–14 lead heading into the second.

Alfred State opened the second quarter with a 6–0 run, but Bard responded and chipped away at the deficit. A Jenna George layup pushed the ASC lead to 28–24, but two quick buckets, including a Raptors buzzer-beater, sent Bard into halftime with a 29–28 advantage.

The Pioneers erupted out of the break, launching an 11–0 run capped by a Niles three-pointer to take a 39–29 lead. ASC maintained control the rest of the way.
In the fourth, Kirsten Merritt knocked down a three to extend the lead to 57–45 with 1:34 remaining, sealing the win as the Pioneers claimed the consolation game and their first victory of the season.

Alfred State will now hit the road to face SUNY Cobleskill on November 18, with tipoff scheduled for 5 p.m.
