Hamburg, NY- The Alfred State women's basketball team took down the Hilbert Hawks for the second time this year, 67-47. The Pioneers move to 5-14 on the season.
Three Pioneers scored in double figures, with Jenna George leading the way with 17 points and five steals. Taylor Benjamin notched a double-double, tallying 10 points and 18 rebounds. Sarah Somers added 10 points as well.
Somers opened the game with a layup, Kirsten Merritt followed with a three to take an early 5-0 lead. The Hawks were able to tie the game at 10-10, before the Pios went on a 6-0 run to close the quarter leading 16-10.
The Pioneers kept the momentum going into the second, as they opened on a 12-3 run to take a 28-13 lead. The Hawks rallied to end the half with a 32-24 deficit.
Jordan Niles opened the second half with a layup off of a Josie Barton steal. Somers and Benjamin followed with back-to-back layups, that helped Alfred State maintain their double-digit lead, going into fourth, 51-37.
In the fourth, The Pioneers were able to hold off the Hawks offensive attack to get the 67-47 win. The Pios will return home Saturday February 1st for a matchup against Pitt-Greensburg at 3 pm.
