Alfred, NY- The Alfred State men's basketball team took down Penn State Behrend 52-49 in a close battle. The Pioneers move to 3-14 on the season and 2-6 in AMCC play.
Michael Miller led the way with 17 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Jacob Gonzalez followed behind with 12 points, two assists, and one steal.
Ben Sneddon notched six points and seven rebounds.
The Pioneers opened the game with back-to-back layups from
Avery Cunningham and
Mason Putnam to take the 4-0 lead. A few possessions later, Darius Cunningham knocked down a three from the top of the key. After some back-and-forth action, back-to-back layups from Miller gave ASC the 15-13 lead. The first half would remain closely contested until
Jacob Gonzalez went on a 6-0 run to give the Pios a 27-20 lead. From there Alfred State would take a 29-25 lead into the half.
Behrend opened the second half with a run of their own to take the 36-34 lead. After two Miller free throws tied the game, D. Cunningham found A. Cunningham on a backdoor layup to regain a 38-36 lead. Both teams traded baskets, with the Pioneers carrying a 50-49 advantage with 58 seconds left in the game. Miller would then force a Lions turnover with 38 seconds left in the game. After a missed jumper, the Pioneers forced another Behrend turnover with 6 seconds left in the game. Behrend was forced to foul and sent
Dylan Perry to the line to ice the game. He would knock both down to put the game out of reach as the Pios went on to win 52-49.
The Pioneers are on the road to Pittsburgh, Pa to take on La Roche University, on January 25, tip-off is set for 2 pm.
