ALFRED, NY - Alfred State men's basketball dropped to the Carlow Celtics in a close game 83-76. Pioneers fall to 2-14 on the season and 1-6 in conference play.
Michael Miller led the team in scoring with 21 points, as well as leading in assists with 5. He, Mason Putnam, and Dylan Perry each had two 3-pointers. Darius Cunningham led in rebounds with 8.
The first half was a battle between both teams. Avery Cunningham kicked Alfred off with a shot from deep. Putnam then followed him up with a drive to the basket.
After some more back-and-forth, Miller scored a layup which was then followed up by a Ben Sneddon bucket to tie the game 22-22 in the 11th minute. After a three by Miller and a couple of free throws towards the end of the half, Pioneers went into the break trailing just by two as the score was 40-38.
The second half continued to be a close matchup between both teams. Dylan Perry began to come alive for the Pioneers and notched two shots from deep and a mid-range jumper.
With just under seven minutes remaining, Miller made a tip in to give Alfred a one-point lead 68-67. A short while after, the teams continued fighting for the lead with D. Cunningham's layup tying it up 74-74 with four minutes remaining.
The Pioneers ended up falling short as they were unable to take the lead and win the game. The final score ended 83-76.
The Pioneers' next game will be Wednesday, January 22nd as they take on Penn State Behrend at home.
