Utica, NY- The Alfred State women's basketball drops a hard-fought game against SUNY Poly 62-53. The Pioneers fall to 1-5 on the season.
Two Pioneers notched double doubles, with Taylor Benjamin leading the way with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Sarah Somers also had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
After a tightly contested first half, the Pioneers took a two-point deficit into the halftime break 27-25.
Somers opened the second half with a layup and a free throw to take a 28-27 lead. From there the Wildcats would go on a run to regain the lead as they took a 44-32 lead into the fourth.
The Pioneers started the fourth with a Benjamin lay up followed by two Josie Barton free throws. A few possessions later, Kirsten Merritt knocked down a three to make it a 47-39 game. After a 6-0 Poly run, Benjamin stopped the run with a three then two free throws on the next possession. With less than three minutes left in the game, the Pioneers went on a 9-2 run, but Poly was able to hold off the Pios to get the win.
Alfred State will be back on the road Tuesday November 26th, as they take on Keuka at 5 pm.
