Alfred, NY- Alfred State women's basketball suffered a loss to Alfed University in the Alfred Classic championship 68-54. After the game, Pioneers move to 1-3 on the season.
Sarah Somers took charge for the Pioneers on offense and on the boards, tallying 24 points and eight boards. Taylor Benjamin aided her with 8 rebounds also. Taylor Searle followed behind Somers with 14 points of her own. Â
As Pioneers started off the beginning of the game trailing, Somers fought to stay in it for the Pios as she had the hot hand and dropped 14 straight points. Somers scored all the Pioneers first quarter baskets.
Coming into the second half with an eleven-point deficit, Benjamin notched her first bucket in the game within the paint. After some time, Kristen Merrit added two shots from deep for the Pioneers going into halftime.
Into the fourth quarter, Searle and Somers continued taking turns scoring buckets for the Pioneers. However, the Pioneers fell short in tightening the gap and fell 68-54.
Taylor Searler won all all tournament team honors.Â
Pios will remain home to face off against Elmira College on Wednesday, November 20 at 7pm.
