ALFRED, N.Y.– Alfred State women's basketball earned their first win of the season over Delhi in the first game of the Alfred Classic at Alfred University, 79-43. The Pios move to 1-2 on the season.
It was an all-around team effort for the win,
Taylor Searle led the scoring with 15 points, two rebounds, and three steals.
Taylor Benjamin was right behind with 14 points, nine rebounds, and six assists.
Mary Gibson earned a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The Pioneers started the game on a seven-point run, with layups by
Sarah Somers, and Benjamin and a 3-pointer by
Kirsten Merritt. Alfred then held the Broncos at eight points and went on another seven-point run to bring the score to 24-8. A steal by
Jenna George led to a fast-break layup to close out the first quarter 31-11. George took that momentum into the second half, with another layup, assisted by Gibson. Alfred State would go on a nine-point run before Delhi would score again.
Anna Merry would close out the half with a 3-pointer assisted by Benjamin, 49-17.
Searle opened the third quarter with a layup.
Jordan Niles notched a layup and 3-pointer, assisted by
Josie Barton, making the score 56-19. Searle scored another layup, assisted by Benjamin, to close out the third quarter 69-30. In the fourth quarter, Alfred focused on their play calling and working the bench on the floor, only scoring 10 points.
The Pioneers head back to Orvis Activities Center for day two of the Alfred Classic Tournament and will take on the winner of the Alfred University and Hiram College game at 4:30 pm on Sunday, November 16th.
