ALFRED, N.Y.– The Alfred State Women's Basketball team fell to SUNY Cobleskill in the home opener, 65-50 The Pios fall to 0-2 with plenty of season left to improve.
Taylor Benjamin led the Pios with 14 points, six rebounds, and two assists. Kirsten Merritt was right behind with 13 points, and four assists, while Sarah Somers tallied 10 points, and Jordan Niles notched six rebounds.
The first quarter started slow, and Benjamin closed out the quarter with a 3-pointer, tying it 11-11. Alfred would take the lead for the first time in the second quarter from a layup by Benjamin. After some back-and-forth action, a layup by Merritt would help the Pioneers pull away with the lead. Going into the half, 28-25.
A layup from Niles started the scoring in the third. Benjamin would score another layup assisted by Merritt to give Alfred an eight-point lead, 37-29. Cobleskill would tie it back up with four minutes left in the third. Merritt would make a 3-pointer assisted by Anna Merry, but that was not enough for the Tigers to take the lead back at the end of the third quarter, 49-45. In the fourth quarter, the Pioneers did not score until 2 minutes remaining in the game, giving Cobleskill the win.
The Pioneer are back in action on Saturday at Alfred University to open the Alfred Classic against SUNY Delhi; tip-off is at 5 pm.
