Pioneers Sweep Day Four of Spring Break Trip

The Alfred State softball team swept a day four doubleheader at the Gene Cusic Classic. The Pioneers dominated from the start with a 11-1 victory over Elms in the opener and then won a hard fought 7-5 battle with previously unbeaten RIT. 

Versus Elms the Pioneers scored in all five of their at bats. They scored three in the 1st, five in the 2nd, two in the 3rd, and a single run in the 4th. The Blazers got their lone run of the game in the top of the 5th with two outs.

  • Arianna Traugott (Elmira) scored on an error, Sarah Boyce (Cortland) scored on a wild pitch, and Angela Martone (Candor) delivered a RBI single in the 1st.
  • Traugott hit a RBI double to left center, Danayah Diaz (Union Endicott) delivered a RBI single, and Boyce and and Brittany Fisher (Indianapolis, IN) hit back-to-back sac flies, and Brianna Dittman (Brooklyn/James Madison) capped the five run inning with a RBI single to center to make it 8-0.
  • Traugott scored on a wild pitch and Boyce hit a RBI ground out in the 3rd.
  • Martone scored on a throwing error in the 4th.

Traugott and Dittman were each 2 for 3 with a RBI while Diaz was 2 for 4 with a RBI. Traugott improved to 3-1 on the mound with the complete game. She allowed four hits and one run while walking and striking out five.

RIT got on the board in the 1st when Erin Guinan hit a RBI groundout to second. The Pioneers scored the next seven runs of the game. They tied it on a RBI single to deep short by Traugott in the 2nd. They took the lead in the 5th with four big runs. Diaz singled to lead off the inning and came all the way around on a throwing error after sac bunt. Marissa Varela (Egg Harbor Township, NJ) hit a RBI single to left, Renee Yezarski (Alfred Almond) followed with a two run single up the middle. In the 6th, Boyce collected a RBI single to right and scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-1.

RIT scored a pair of runs in the 6th and two more in the 7th to cut the lead to the 7-5. They had the game tying run at the plate when Fisher got a line out to center to end the contest.

Lovell and Boyce were each 3 for 3 in the nightcap. Fisher went the distance allowing 10 hits and four earned runs to earn her first victory of the season. She didn't walk a batter and struck out two.

The Pioneers are 4-1 in their last five games and will wrap up their spring break at the Gene Cusic Classic on Thursday with their final doubleheader. They take on Rockford at 9 a.m. and Nazareth at 11 a.m. (please note new opponents).
