Morrisville, NY- The Alfred State Volleyball team split on the road today at the Morrisville Classic. After a tough 0-3 (22-25, 22-25, 11-25) loss to Saint Francis University, the Pioneers bounced back with a strong 3-0 (27-25, 25-19, 25-17) victory over SUNY Poly. With the split, Alfred State moves to 2-1 on the season.
In game one,
Gloria Stem led the Pioneers offensively with nine kills while adding five digs and two service aces. Izzy Carew had 19 assists, while
Alayna Tomlinson contributed six kills and
Erin Gregoire added four kills.
The Pioneers battled throughout the opening two sets against Saint Francis, falling 25-22 in both. Alfred State was unable to overcome the Red Wolves in the third set, dropping the final set 25-11.
The Pioneers quickly turned things around in game two by sweeping SUNY Poly in three sets. Alfred State opened the match with a tough fought 27-25 victory before taking control in the second and third sets, winning 25-19 and 25-17.
Stem powered the Pioneers offense with 15 kills while adding six aces. While Gregoire recorded 11 kills on 12 attacks with just one error hitting at a .917 percent. Carew helped lead the Pioneers offense with 26 assists, while
Caley Larsen added five aces. The Pioneers continued to build momentum throughout the second and third sets, which led Alfred State to close out the sweep.
Alfred State will be back on the court tomorrow at 10AM and 12PM to take on SUNY Morrisville and Alfred University.
