Alfred, N.Y. – The Alfred State women's soccer team battled Cortland on Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Stadium, with the Pioneers falling 0-7 to the Red Dragons. Alfred State moves to 3-2-1 on the season.
The Pioneers came out looking to start their attack early, with
Isabella Hoffmann recording Alfred State's first shot just over two minutes into the game. Hoffmann continued to create opportunities throughout the match, finishing with a team-high four shots, including two on goal.
Kaitlyn Howell also tested the Cortland defense early, putting a shot on goal in the 12th minute that was saved by the Red Dragons goalkeeper. Hoffmann came close again in the 16th minute when her shot found the top of the crossbar.
Cortland opened the scoring in the 11th minute and added two more goals before halftime to take a 3-0 lead . The Pioneers remained aggressive and continued to create opportunities by earning a corner kick late in the opening half.
The Pioneers continued to compete in the second half, with Hoffmann recording another shot in the 65th minute and Alfred State earning four corner kicks after halftime. The Pioneers finished the afternoon with five total shots and five corner kicks.
In goal,
Madeline Cox faced a busy day and kept Alfred State within striking distance with nine saves, including six in the opening half. Cox made several stops throughout the game as Cortland finished with 22 total shots.
Cortland added four goals in the second half to secure the 7-0 final.
The Pioneers look to bounce back on Saturday, September 26
th, when the Pioneers travel to La Roche University to take on the Red Hawks. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 PM.
