Alfred NY- The Alfred State volleyball team secured a big win today against the Houghton Highlanders, 3-1 (14-25, 25-9, 25-14, 25-18). The Pioneers move to 1-0 on the season.
Gloria Stem led the team with 13 kills and had 7 digs, with Alayna Tomlison, and
Brianny Rodriguez having 7 kills apiece.
Isabel Carew led the team with 30 assists and had 8 digs.
Ava Wickes led the backline with a team high 14 digs.
The Highlanders took the first set (25-14), but then Pioneers bounced back and took the next 3 straight sets. In set two, the Pioneers went on a 12-2 run as Tomlison tallied three aces and two kills. Stem put in three kills, while Rodriguez had two kills and one block. The Pioneers won the set, 25-9.
After a back-and forth battle at the beginning of set three, the Pios went on a 7-1 run to win the third set. Becca Jackson carried the run with three kills and a block. Rodriquez added three kills, while Stem had back-to-back kills. Alfred took the set, 25-14.
In the fourth set, ASC and Houghton battled hard with the Highlanders taking a 8-3 lead. Stem sparked a 5-0 run to help the Pioneers tie the game at 8-8. A few plays later, Pioneers went on a 13-3 run to take control of the fourth set. Leading the way on this run was Stem and Tomlison who tallied two kills apiece and highlighting the run was Erin Gregorie with a powerful kill. The Pios would go on to win the set and the game for their first win of the season.
The Pioneers will be back in action on September 4
th at Saint Francis University and at Suny Polytechnic Institute.
