Alfred, NY- The Alfred State baseball team fell in doubleheader against Pitt-Greensburg 7-6 and 14-4. The Pioneers finished the regular season with a 15-25 record and a 9-8 record against conference foes.
Game 1: 7-6
Jordan Hughes and
Sean Connor came through big for the Pioneers as they both tallied three run bombs.
Frank Grad also had a good day at the plate as he went 3-3. Hughes would suffer the loss on the mound.
The Bobcats struck first as they scored two runs in the second, four runs in the third, and one run in the fifth to take a 7-0 lead. The Pioneers were able to get on the broad in the bottom half of the fifth.
Matty Eygabroad led off with a walk. Two batters later, Grad notched a single through the right side to put runners on the corners. Hughes then stepped in the box and hit a three-run blast over the center field fence to make it a 7-3 game.
After a scoreless sixth inning, ASC had their eyes on another comeback effort. With two outs, Grad tallied a single up the middle, and Hughes followed with a single to center field. Connor then stepped in the box and with a full count he hit a bomb over the left field fence to make it a 7-6 game. The Pioneers could not get any closer as they fell,7-6.
Game 2: 14-4
In game two,
Aiden Cowburn went 2-3 with a double and two RBIs.
Nathan Lucks suffered the loss on the mound.
After a scoreless first inning, Pitt-Greensburg got six runs across in the second, four runs in the fourth, and one run in the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth, the Pioneers scored four runs to cut into the deficit. After one out and two walks,
Christian Morrison loaded the bases with a single towards third base. Cowburn followed with a two RBI double to left field to make it an 11-2 game. The Pio would score on an RBI ground-out from Eygabroad, before an RBI single from
Zach Young made it an 11-4 game.
The Bobcats held the Pioneers offense off the rest of the game as they secured the 14-4 win.
