St. Mary's City, MD- The Alfred State women's lacrosse season comes to a close in the AMCC x United East Crossover Championship game, 20-2. The Pioneers finish the season with a 12-5 overall record.
The Pioneers were led by
Alyssa Turner who netted her first two goals of the season.
Karlee Hargather and
Kari Annunziato assisted on both goals.
Maeve Runyon suffered the loss in goal after tallied eight saves.
The Seahawks came out of the gate fast as they netted nine goals in the first period goal. The Pioneers were able to hold them to four goals in the second, before Turner scored her first goal of the season off a Hargather pass in the final minutes of the second period.
SMCM kept their offense going in the second half, scoring four goals in the third period. ASC got on the board in the fourth as Annunziato found Turner for a man-up goal. The Seahawks went on to win 20-2.
Looking at the Pioneers season, the team finished 12-5 and 3-1 against conference opponents. They were Co AMCC Regular Season Championships and earned the top-seed in the AMCC Tournament. The Pioneers won the Championship title for the first time in program history. The team saw six members earn AMCC All-Conference honors, with Head Coach
Steve Peed taking home Coach of the Year honors in his first season.
Karlee Hargather led ASC with 5 goals and 45 assists for a total of 103 points. She was named AMCC Offensive Player of the Year and garnered First-Team All-Conference honors.
Katerina Strong had a phenomenal freshman season, as she tallied 48 goals and 20 assists for 68 points. She earned First-Team All-Conference honors. Allie Bateson also put in a great year as she took home First-Team All-Conference honors. She led the Pioneers backline all year and caused 30 turnovers while picking up 70 groundballs. All three player was honored on the AMCC All-Tournament team as well.
Head Coach
Steve Peed added, "I'm really proud of the work we put in this year, and I think we exceeded a lot of expectations. We started six people who never played the game before and managed a dozen wins and an AMCC championship. That's a pretty good season for a second-year program. I think we see clearly what we need to do to build for the future, but this season was a strong foundation to build upon".
