Five Homeruns Helped Pioneers To Sweep Lions

Alfred, NY- The Alfred State baseball team swept Penn State Altoona after huge offensive showcases, 12-11 in game one and 9-3 in game two. The Pioneers move to 15-23 on the year and 9-6 in conference play.
 
Game 1 – 12-11

Zach Young led the way for the Pioneers as he went 4-5 with two homers and six RBIs, while Jordan Hughes went 4-5 with two homeruns and five RBIs. Matty Eygabroad was 3-5 with a double. Daniel Lewis came into close and pitched 1.2 innings to get the win.

The Pioneers struck first with two runs in their first at-bat. Eygabroad led off with a single down the left field line. Young followed with his first homer of the day to take the 2-0 lead.

The Lions took the lead after scoring three runs in the second, and seven runs in the third. ASC answered with two runs in the bottom of the third. Eygabroad led off with a double to right field. Young tallied an RBI single up the middle and would advance to second on a wild pitch a few pitches later. After a fielder's choice put runners on the corners, Hughes tallied an RBI on a ground out to make it a 10-4 game.

PSA added a run to their lead in the fourth inning. In the fifth, the Pios cut into the deficit with two runs. Young led off with single, and then two batters Hughes notched his first home run of the game to make it a 11-6 game.

Then in the sixth, the Pioneers tied the game with five runs. Young sent one over the fence bringing in three runs, Hughes singled up the middle while Frank Grad scored, and Logan Lutz was walked with the bases loaded to tie the game as Hughes scored sending the game to extra innings at 11-11. In the bottom of the eighth, Hughes sent a solo shot to deep right field, giving the Pios a walk off victory in game one.
 
Game 2 - 9-3

In game two, Young continued his standout day with two hits, one RBI, and one run. Hughes went 1-2 with a homerun and three RBIs, while Frad Grad went 1-2 with two RBIs. Dominic Morsch came in relief and pitched 4.2 innings to get the win.

Eygabroad got hit by a pitch to lead off the game, he would steal second a few pitches later. Then Grad tallied an RBI single down the left field line for the 1-0 lead.

Then in the second, Christian Morrison got hit by a pitch and stole second a few pitches later. Aiden Cowburn laid down a bunt single to put runners on the corners, and RBI sacrifice fly from Eygabroad made it a 2-0 game.

The Lions were able to tie the game in the top of the third, but the Pioneers regained the lead with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. After back-to-back walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases, ASC scored an a double-play then on a wild pitch a few plays later for the 4-2 lead.

After a scoreless inning, Young led off the fifth with a single through the left side for his 100th hit as a Pioneer. Grad would reach on an error, before Hughes put in his third homer of the day to make it a 7-2 lead.

In the sixth inning, Alfred State added two more insurance runs. Morrison led off with a double, before Cowburn got walked. Eygabroad laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners, and an RBI single from Young pushed the lead to six, 8-2. Frad followed with an RBI sacrifice fly for the 9-2 lead.

The Lions were able to score one more run in the top of the seventh but could not get any closer as the Pios swept the day. Alfred State will be back on the road as they travel to Cortland on Tuesday April 28th for a game against the Red Dragons.
