Erie, PA- The Alfred State baseball team took game three of the series against Penn State Behrend, 13-9. The Pioneers move to 13-22 on the year.
Joshua Gardner led the way for the Pioneers as he went 1-2 with a triple, and three RBIs.
Jordan Hughes went 2-3 with a double and a two RBIs.
Caleb Wilson came in relief and pitched 2.2 innings to get the win.
The Lions struck first as they scored one run in the first, three runs in the second, and three runs in the sixth for the 7-0 lead. The Pioneers got going in the seventh as they scored four runs to cut into the deficit.
Joshua Gardner got hit by a pitch to lead off the at-bat. After back-to-back walks loaded the bases,
Matty Eygabroad tallied an RBI walk to make it a 7-1 game.
Zach Young followed with an RBI single to left field.
Frank Grad would get an RBI on a fielder's choice that made it a 7-3 game. After a hit by pitch loaded the bases, Eygabroad scored and cut the deficit to 7-4.
Behrend added two more runs to their lead in the seventh, and the Pioneers answered with seven runs in the eighth to take their first lead of the game. Gardner led this inning off by getting hit with a pitch.
Christian Morrison and
Dylan DeMaro got walked to load the bases. Then an RBI sacrifice fly from Eygabroad made it a 9-5 game. Young followed with an RBI single. After a Grad single up the middle reloaded the bases, Hughes notched a two RBI double to cut the deficit to one, 9-8. Two batters later, Gardner notched a three RBI triple to put the Pios up 11-9.
In the ninth, the Pioneers added two insurance runs. DeMaro led off with a single up the middle. Eygabroad followed with a single down the left field line, before DeMaro scored after Young laid down a bunt single. Eygabroad would come home to score on a sacrifice fly from Grad for the 13-9 lead.
Alfred State held the Lions scoreless in the bottom half of the ninth to get the 13-9 win. The Pioneers will be back on the road on Tuesday April 21
st for a game against Ithaca.
