Alfred, NY- The Alfred State baseball team dropped the series against the Hilbert Hawks as they fell in game one 3-1, and dropped game two, 8-3. The Pioneers moves to 12-20 on the season and 6-4 in conference play.
Game One 3-1
Jordan Hughes suffered the loss after pitching 6.1 innings, only allowing two runs on four hits, with two walks and two strikeouts.
The Hawks got on the broad first as they scored one run in the second. After a few scoreless innings, the Pioneers tied the game in the bottom of the fifth as they scored one run. With one out,
Logan Lutz notched a single to right center and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Lutz would come home to score on an error to tie the game at 1-1.
Hilbert regained the lead in the top of the seventh after scoring two runs. The Pios were close to rallying in the bottom of the seventh, as they got two runners in scoring position but could not get them across as they fell 3-1.
Game Two 8-3
Frank Grad led the way as he went 2-4 with an RBI.
Dylan DeMaro went 1-2 with a double.
Caleb Wilson suffered the loss on the mound.
The Hawks took the early lead as they scored four runs in their first at-bat. From there both teams were locked in a pitcher's duel, until Hilbert scored on an error in the top of the seventh to make it a 5-0 game.
Hilbert would go on to add three more runs to their lead in the top of the eighth to make it an 8-0 game. The Pioneers got on the broad in the bottom of the eighth as they scored one run. With one out,
Sean Connor reached on an error.
Christian Morrison followed with a single to left field. Two batters later,
Frank Grad notched an RBI single up the middle to make it an 8-1 game.
The in the ninth, ASC would make a late rally as they scored—runs.
Jordan Hughes led off with a walk and went to second on a balk.
Gavin Lasko got walked, and
Aiden Cowburn followed with an RBI single up the middle, which made it an 8-2 game.
Joshua Gardner got hit by a pitch to load the bases for the Pios. ASC was able to get one more run across on an RBI fielder's choice by Connor but could not get any closer as they fell 8-3.
The Pioneers will be back in action on Wednesday April 15, as they head to Erie, PA to take on PS Behrend.
