Pioneers Sweep Warriors In The Sunshine

Fort Myers, FL- The Alfred State baseball team swept Wis. Lutheran to open the spring break trip 2-0. The Pioneers are now 3-11 on the season.
 
Game One – 10-3

Jordan Hughes led the way as he went 2-4 with two homers and two RBIs. He also picked up the win on the mound as he pitched 5.0 innings scattering one run on two hits with seven strikeouts and no walks. Zach Young went 2-5 for three RBIs, while Logan Lutz, Gavin Lasko, and Matty Eygabroad tallied three hits each.

The Warriors got on the board first as they tallied one run in their first at-bat. ASC responded to two runs in the top of the second. Hughes led off the Pioneers at-bat with a solo homer to tie the game at 1-1. Logan Lutz followed with a bunt single. Two batters later, Steven Ambroggio notched a single through the right side that moved Lutz to third. Then an RBI single from Eygabroad gave Alfred the 2-1 lead.

The Pioneers added another run to their lead in the third, after a second solo homerun from Hughes, 3-1.

In the fourth, ASC tallied two more runs to their lead. Aiden Cowburn led off with a single through the left side. Then an Ambroggio single down the left line moved Cowburn to third. Cowburn would go on to score as Ambroggio got caught in a run down. Eygabroad followed that play with a single toward third base. After a Frank Grad walk, Young notched an RBI single to the right center gap for the 5-1 lead.

Later in the fifth, Alfred scored four runs to make it a 9-1 game. Lutz tallied a single to right center to lead off the at-bat, Lasko followed with a single up the middle. With two on, Cowburn tallied an RBI single through the right side for the 6-1 lead. Then on an RBI fielder's choice from Ambroggio the Pios took a 7-1 lead. After an Eygabroad walk, Young notched a two RBI single to give Alfred the 9-1 lead.

In the top of the sixth, ASC added one more insurance run. Lutz led off with a single to right center, and with advance to second on an error a few plays later. A single from Lasko would put runners on the corners, and Lutz would score on an RBI groundout from Cowburn for the 10-1 lead.

The Warrior fought back to scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth but could not get closer as the Pioneers went on to win 10-3.

Game Two – 5-3

In game two, Young went 1-3 with a homer and two RBIs. Eygabroad went 1-2 with three RBIs. Grad tallied a triple and Hughes notched a double. Daniel Lewis got the win after pitching 2.0 innings only allowing two hits no runs and three strikeouts.

After the Warriors struck first two runs, the Pioneers answered with two runs to tie the game at 2-2. Grad led off with a single bunt toward third base. Young followed with a two bomb over the right center fence to tie the game at 2-2.

WLC regained the lead after scoring one run in the fourth. The Pios answered with a run to tie the game at 3-3. Christian Morrison got hit by pitch to lead off the inning. He would advance to second on a wild pitch then third on a throwing error. Two batters later, Eygabroad laid down an RBI sacrifice bunt to retie the game, 3-3.

The Pioneers was able to take their first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth as they scored two runs. Brody Froman reached on an error. Morrison got walked to followed. After an out, Eygabroad tallied a two RBI single for the 5-3 lead.

The Pioneers held off the Warriors to take the win, 5-3. The Pioneers will be back in action tomorrow as they take on Haverford at 9 am.
