Cresson, PA – The Alfred State men's basketball team suffered a narrow 92-89 road loss to Mount Aloysius, falling to 5-17 overall and 3-10 in AMCC play.
Mykell Lawson led the Pioneers with an impressive 31 points, six assists, and five rebounds. Kennyh Hardeman recorded a dominant double-double, finishing with 20 points, 19 rebounds, and three steals.
The opening half was tightly contested, with both teams tied 8-8 just three minutes into play. Mount Aloysius later gained momentum and built a 21-14 advantage with 12:29 remaining. Alfred State responded late in the half behind key baskets from Lawson and Eli Taft to keep the game within reach. Lawson knocked down a three-pointer with six seconds left to even the score at 41-41 heading into halftime.
The second half remained a back-and-forth battle, with neither side gaining more than a small edge. A layup from Darius Cunningham Jr. gave Alfred State a 50-49 lead with 17:00 remaining, but the Mounties answered and eventually pushed their lead to as many as 10 points. The Pioneers made a late push, going on a 13-7 run over the final five minutes to cut the deficit to 91-86. Lawson hit another three-pointer with six seconds remaining to bring Alfred State within three, but the Pioneers were unable to regain possession as Mount Aloysius held on for the 92-89 win.
Alfred State will next host Hilbert on Wednesday, February 11th, with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
