Alfred, NY- The Alfred State women's lacrosse team fell in their home opener to SUNY Canton. The Pioneers drop to 1-1 on the season.
Karlee Hargather led the charge for ASC, recording a hat trick with three assists on nine shots.
Katerina Strong netted two goals of her own on four shots.
Alaina Gernatt and
Kari Annunziato tallied a goal each.
Maeve Runyon stopped 10 of 19 shots between the pipes.
Alfred State wasted no time jumping out to a quick lead with Hargather, Annunziato, and Gernatt scoring in a 46 second span to take a 3-0 lead 9:07 into the first quarter. The Roos responded with a four-goal run of their own to take the lead early in the second quarter, 4-3. Strong was able to equalize with 12:17 in the second off a solo goal effort, but SUNY Canton scored three goals before the halftime break making it 7-4.
Canton continued their momentum out of the half scoring two goals to put ASC in a 9-4 hole with 6:37 left in the 3
rdquarter. Hargather broke the scoring drought two and a half minutes into the fourth quarter making it 9-5. Strong and Hargather each capitalized on man-up opportunities late, but the comeback effort fell short as the Pioneers dropped the contest, 9-7.
Alfred State will host Thiel College for another non-conference matchup on Tuesday, March 3
rd for a 5pm start.
