Pioneers Picked Up First Win Against Brockport

Virginia Beach, VA- The Alfred State baseball team picked up their first win of the season against Brockport, 7-6. The Pioneers move to 1-10 on the season.

Logan Lutz went 2-4 with a double and an RBI. While, Zach Young went 1-5 with his lone hit being a homerun. Jordan Hughes went 1-4 with two RBIs, and Joshua Gardner and Carter Bandelian added doubles.

On the mound, Hughes got the start and pitched 3.1 innings, only allowing one earned run on six hits, two walks, and four strikeouts. Daniel Lewis came in to close out the game and pitched 3.1 innings only allowing three hits, no runs, and two strikeouts, while picking up his first win of the season.

The Golden Eagles struck first as they scored one run in the bottom of the first. After a few scoreless innings the Pioneers put up five runs in the top of the fourth to take a 5-1 lead. Frank Grad got walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Joey Sanna got hit by a pitch, then both runners would advance on a wild pitch. With two runners in scoring position, Hughes tallied a two RBI single to right field to take a 2-1 lead. Christian Morrison got hit by pitch to follow, and Gardner stepped in the box and notched an RBI double to left field. With two outs, Lutz put in an RBI single to make it a 4-1 game. Bandelian followed with an RBI double to right center for the 5-1 lead.

Brockport tallied three runs in the bottom half of the inning to make it a 5-4 game. The Golden Eagles regained their lead in the bottom of the sixth after scoring two runs, 6-5. Alfred State answered with two runs of their own in the top of the seventh. With one out, Grad notched a single to center field. Young followed with a two-run bomb to give the Pioneers the 7-6 lead.

The Pioneers held Brockport scoreless the rest of the game to take the 7-6 victory. They will be back in action tomorrow for a rematch against the Golden Eagles, with first pitch set for 11 am.
