Pioneers Come Up Short in Heartbreaker to Hilbert

Alfred, NY – The Alfred State men's basketball team fell at home to the visiting Hilbert Hawks, 63–61. The Pioneers drop to 5-18 overall and 3-11 in AMCC play.

Mykell Lawson sparked the Pioneers' offense with 16 points, seven rebounds, and three steals. Darius Cunningham Jr. added 11 points and three assists, while Kennyh Hardeman dominated the glass with 18 rebounds to go along with seven points.

Alfred State came out with the early edge as Lawson knocked down a three-pointer just 10 seconds in to set the tone. Hilbert slowly began to build a lead, but the Pioneers responded with a 10–4 run to take a 16–14 advantage, capped by a Lawson jumper with 12:31 remaining. Over the next four minutes, both teams traded baskets as Cunningham Jr. drilled a three and Lawson added a mid-range jumper to keep ASC in front, 21–20, with 8:43 to go. The Hawks then seized momentum for the remainder of the half, closing strong to take a 38–28 lead into the break.

The Pioneers came out hot in the second half, using a 20–7 run over the first nine minutes to erase the deficit. Lawson led the charge with nine key points as Alfred State grabbed a 48–45 lead with 10:58 remaining. Hilbert battled back down the stretch, but a Cunningham Jr. layup gave ASC a 59–55 advantage with 4:10 left. The Hawks found momentum when it mattered most, finishing on an 8–4 run over the final minutes to take a 63–61 lead. Alfred State had a last-second opportunity to win, but a three-pointer rimmed out as Hilbert held on for the victory.

The Pioneers will next hit the road to battle La Roche on Saturday, February 14th, with tipoff scheduled for 4 p.m.
