Pios’ Comeback Effort Not Enough in Road Defeat Against Celtics

Pittsburgh, PA – The Alfred State Men's Basketball team fell at Carlow, 70-62, in an AMCC road contest. The Pioneers drop to 5-15 on the season and 3-8 in conference play.

Mykell Lawson led the Pios with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Kennyh Hardeman recorded a double-double with 16 points and 16 boards. Darius Cunningham Jr. added 14 points, seven rebounds, and three assists.

Carlow jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead just two minutes into the game. Alfred State responded, and with 13:23 left in the first half, Lawson's layup tied the game at 8-8. Three minutes later, he knocked down a three-pointer to give the Pios their first lead, 13-12. Both teams traded baskets down the stretch, but the Celtics regained the lead and carried a 32-26 advantage into halftime.

In the second half, Lawson converted both free throws in the opening minute to cut the deficit to four. Alfred State trailed by as much as 11 points, but a 12-5 run—sparked by Cunningham Jr.'s five points—narrowed the gap to 66-62 with 1:07 remaining. That would be as close as the Pios got, as Carlow held on to secure the 70-62 victory.

Alfred State will next visit Pitt-Bradford on Wednesday, February 4th, with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
