Five in Double Figures as Pioneers Overpower Celtics

Alfred, NY – The Alfred State women's basketball team delivered a dominant 85-42 victory in their conference matchup against the Carlow Celtics. With their fourth straight win, Alfred improves to a 7-6 overall record and 2-2 in conference play.

Alfred State put together an impressive offensive performance, placing five players in double figures. Taylor Benjamin led the way with a stellar two-way effort, finishing with 15 points, four steals, and three blocks while shooting an efficient 5-of-7 from beyond the arc. Sarah Somers filled the stat sheet with 12 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks, while Jordan Niles also added 12 points, knocking down two three-pointers. Emeline Barton and Taylor Searle chipped in 10 points apiece, with Barton also pulling down nine rebounds.

Alfred opened the first minute of play with a huge spark of momentum as they jumped ahead to a 7-0 lead. Benjamin knocked down her first triple of the game following layups from Alyssa Auer and Somers. After Carlow got on the board with a three-pointer, Alfred quickly extended its advantage behind a three and layup from Niles, followed by another bucket from Somers to make it 14-3. ASC kept their foot on the gas peddle for the remainder of the first period as Barton and found their rhythm, heading into the second period with a 23-13 cushion.

With 6:49 remaining before the halftime break, the Celtics trimmed the deficit to seven, 26-19. Pioneers answered immediately with a decisive 10-0 run, highlighted by three-pointers from Niles and Benjamin and a layup from Jenna George, pushing the margin to 36-19. Scores from Barton in the paint and Somers at the free-throw line sent Alfred into the break with a 39-21 advantage.

The third quarter was all Alfred State, as the Pioneers erupted for 29 points while holding Carlow to just six. Alfred's depth was on full display, with Mallory Sprissler, MaKenna Manning, and Kirsten Merritt all contributing to extend the lead to 68-28.

The final quarter followed the same script, as Alfred maintained control to seal the 85-42 victory. Dre'Ahnna Devers also recorded her first career points for the Pioneers, connecting on a three-pointer.

The Pioneers head to Altoona, PA next on Saturday, January 10th where they will face the Lions. Tipoff is set for 2pm.
