Pittsburgh, PA- The Alfred State Women's Basketball team captured a win on the road this weekend over the Carlow Celtics, 61-49. With this win, the Pioneers bumped their overall record to 12-8, while 7-4 in conference play.
Â
Leading the Pioneers on the court was
Emeline Barton, as she notched a double-double, tallying 21 points and grabbing 18 rebounds.
Taylor Searle added 10 points and six rebounds of her own while
Taylor Benjamin knocked down eight points, securing five rebounds for Alfred.
Â
ASC and Carlow went back and forth throughout the opening quarter, with neither team able to build much separation.
Jordan Niles helped spark the Pioneers with early free throws and a fastbreak jumper. A late jumper gave the Celtics a slim 14–13 edge at the end of the first quarter. The Pios used strong defense and transition offense to take control in the second quarter, turning steals into easy points and building momentum. Barton led the charge inside, while
Kirsten Merritt and Searle contributed to stretching the lead. The Pioneers closed the half on a scoring run to take a 34–22 advantage.
Â
The Pioneers continued to apply pressure coming out of the half, to extend their lead early in the third. Carlow trimmed the margin briefly with a small run, but ASC responded with important buckets in the paint and at the free-throw line. The quarter ended with the Pios firmly in front, up 46–30. The Celtics knocked down a pair of three-pointers to open the fourth quarter. The Pioneers quickly answered as Searle and
Finley Harwood used perimeter shooting to regain their momentum. Despite a late push from Carlow, Alfred State closed the game out, 64-40.
Â
The Pios will host Pitt-Bradford on their home court this Wednesday, with tip-off set for 7 pm.
