Strong Second Quarter To Much To Overcome For Alfred State In E8 Opener

Utica, NY- The Alfred State football team drops a hard-fought game against RV Utica Pioneers, 45-13. The ASC Pioneers falls to 2-2 on the season, and 0-1 in conference play.

Noah Currier led the way for the Pioneers as he tallied 53 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown. He also put in an 83-yard kick return touchdown.  Justin Horvath went 14-26 for 97 yards. Elijah Georges notched seven receptions for 43 yards. On the defensive end, Chris Bergman tallied 15 tackles, while Aaron Ellis notched nine tackles including a 20-yard sack.

After a grind it out first quarter, Alfred State found themselves trailing 7-0 going into the second quarter. Utica opened the second quarter with two scores before the Pioneers found the endzone to get their first touchdown in E8 conference play. From 2nd and 16 on their own 26-yard line, Justin Horvath found Elijah Georges on back-to-back plays, the first was a four-yard completion followed by a 13-yard completion. A few plays later, Horvath found Currier for a seven-yard completion to enter Utica territory. Rafael Class was the next Horvath completion that went for 12 yards to put the Pios on Utica's 31-yard line. On the next play, Currier broke a few tackles on his way to a 31-yard touchdown rush up the middle to make it a 21-7 game. Utica was able to score twice before the halftime break for the 35-7 lead.

After only allowing a field goal in the third quarter, the Pioneers forced a turnover late in the fourth but could not capitalize on it. After a Utica touchdown a few possessions later, Currier took the kickoff back for a 83-yard return touchdown to cut into the deficit, but Alfred State could not get any closer as Utica went on to win, 45-13. The Pioneers will return home for a game against SUNY Morrisville with kickoff set for noon.
