ASC Splits the Day in Buffalo Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Buffalo, NY – The Alfred State volleyball team split the day in the Buffalo Classic as they suffered a loss against Buffalo State 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-9) and took a win against SUNY Fredonia 3-1(25-21, 25-22, 25-18, 25-22). After the day, Pios record moves to 7-5 on the season.

Game 2 – 3-1 (25-21, 25-22, 25-18, 25-22)

In game two Gloria Stem led with 14 kills and 10 digs while Alayna Tomlinson followed with 12 kills and 10 digs. Carmen Crowley had a huge performance as she tallied seven kills with no errors for a .600 hitting percentage. Gabriella Thurmond registered 38 assists and Ava Wickes 17 digs.

The first set was a close contest with the largest deficit being four points. Both teams began the set looking to settle into their offense as both sides traded errors up until they saw a 10-10 scoreboard. Crowley got the offense going as she notched the first kill of the set off an assist from Thurmond. The Pioneers led throughout the remainder of the set with Tomlinson and Thurmond each delivering an ace. Thurmond wrapped up the set with a kill assisted by Stem.

After dropping the second set, Alfred rallied in the third. With the score being even at 7-7, the Pioneers capitalized off two attack errors by the Blue Devils and a kill each by Caley Larsen and Stem. Later into the action, Alfred fully shifted the momentum their way when Tomlinson and Alli Hillyard delivered a kill consecutively, 17-13. Shortly after, Stem and Crowley tacked on two more. Alfred's momentum carried them through the remainder of the set to win it 25-18.

The final set was a showdown between both sides as it was close throughout all the action. Despite the Blue Devils striking first, Pios answered back and saw a 4-2 lead after Crowley and Erin Gregoire tallied a kill each. From there, the Pioneers maintained a margin of three points throughout the action. Larsen followed a kill by Gregoire with an ace to up the margin by four, 17-13. With the trading between both sides continuing, Fredonia managed to even up the playing field, 21-21. Immediately after, the Blue Devils registered an error and Tomlinson an ace for a two-point lead, Alfred. Stem put the nail in the coffin with an ace to close off the set 25-22 to win the match.
 
Game 1 - 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-9)

Leading the way for Alfred on offense, Tomlinson and Stem tallied 13 kills in game one. Cailtyn Gilman and Hillyard combined for four blocks on the defensive end.

In the first set, the Pios were battling back-and-forth throughout the beginning. The Bengals continued to maintain a lead of at least three points. With a service ace by Stem and a Kill by Tomlinson, Alfred was able to tie it all up at 12-12. From there, the Pios saw themselves with another deficit to shorten, but were unable to catch up as they dropped the set 25-18.

The second and third sets were a similar story with the Pioneers looking but unable to find any momentum, losing both sets and taking the loss 3-0.

Alfred will return home to face off against the Soaring Eagles of Elmira on Wednesday, Spetember 24th at 7pm.
