Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

ASC Suffers Two Losses in RIT Tri-match

Rochester, NY – The Alfred State volleyball team suffered two losses on the day against the Tigers 3-2 (26-24, 29-27, 22-25, 22-25, 11-15) and the Golden Eagles 3-1 (24-26, 25-20, 21-25, 16-25). After the tri-match, Alfred moves to 6-2 on the season.

Game 1 3-2 (26-24, 29-27, 22-25, 22-25, 11-15)

ASC game one leaders consisted of Alayna Tomlinson as she lit up the court with 19 kills, 18 digs and three aces. Gloria Stem followed suit with 17 kills and Gabriella Thurmond grabbed 41 assists. Ava Wickes also notched 21 of her own digs and seven assists.

Set one saw the Pios start aggressively, as they jumped early, going on a five-point rally to put them up 7-2 with kills by Stem and Alli Hillyard. The Tigers fought back, slowly tallying their own points, creating an intense first set. Stem controlled the court as she added five more kills with the help of Tomlinson, adding three of her own. RIT would then go on their own five-point rally to tie up the set, 24-24 before the Pioneers secured the win 26-24.

Caitlyn Gilman initiated the second set with a kill assisted by Thurmond. ASC gained some momentum early in the set from Stem and Tomlinson before the Tigers found their energy with the score jumping from 14-9 Pioneers to 14-17 Tigers. The Pios rallied late in the set, leaning on RIT errors and Tomlinson kills. The Tigers never let up as the Pioneers had to claw back and secure the second set win, 29-27.

The third set had both teams fighting for each point. With four Stem kills, three from Tomlinson and two notched by Erin Gregoire, Alfred couldn't find that late set momentum as the Tigers took the third set, 25-22. The Pioneers struggled to ignite that energy they had in the first two sets, as they tried to rally late in the fourth but to no eval as RIT took set four, 25-22.

With another late rally in the fifth and final set, score 7-14 in favor of the Tigers, Tomlinson and Thurmond aided as much as they could before RIT solidified the win 15-11.

Game 2 – 3-1 (24-26, 25-20, 21-25, 16-25)

In their match against the Golden Eagles, Tomlinson and Stem registered 23 total kills. Thurmond tallied 31 assists while Wickes delivered 12 digs on the defensive end.

With the first set dropped, Pios came into the second ramped up. After being down 3-0 to start the action, Alfred saw a couple set errors by Brockport and service ace along with a kill by Tomlinson to tie the match 4-4 . From there, both teams battled back and forth for a while. However, Alfred capitalized off some more set errors from the Gold Eagles and an ace from Wickes for an 11-7 lead. Tomlinson, Gregoire, and Stem all rallied for the remainder of the set to win it 25-20.

The Pioneers were unable to hold off the Golden Eagles as they dropped the next two sets and lost the game 3-1.

Alfred will participate in the Buffalo Classic next as they first take on SUNY Geneseo. The match is set to begin on Friday, September 19th at 5pm.
