Alfred Dominates The Mustang Tournament

Alfred, NY – The Alfred State volleyball team completed a sweep of the Mustang Tournament as they went 2-0 on the day. They took the first game against Geneva 4-1 (25-16, 26-24, 25-22, 25-16) and won the second game against SUNY Poly 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-0). After the day, Pios move to 4-0 on the season.

Game 1 3-1(25-16, 26-24, 25-22, 25-16)
Gloria Stem had a great showing in game one with 12 kills and 10 digs for a double-double. Gabriella Thurmond notched a double-double as well with 40 assists and 12 digs. Ava Wickes led the defensive back line with 18 tallied digs. While Caley Larsen led the way with five aces.

In the first set, the Pioneers jumped to an early 6-2 to lead from a kill by Alli Hillyard. Shortly after, Erin Gregoire and Stem both nailed down a kill. Alayna Tomlinson, Hillyard, and Stem continued to lead the way throughout the remainder of the set taking it 25-15.

After dropping the second set, the Pioneers responded by taking the third and fourth set.

The third set started with a lot of back-and-forth action until the Pioneers gained momentum. Carmen Crowley and Tomlinson answered Geneva with a kill each, bringing the score to 11-11. After some more battling from both sides, the score was brought to 23-22 Alfred. Crowley notched a kill which was followed by Thurmond's ace to close off the set 25-22.

Pioneers went on to make the fourth set the final one as they came in with the momentum they had from winning the third. Pios were up 11-4 early on. Caley Larsen notched two aces to contribute to the lead. Alfred closed off the set on a high note with two kills from Stem and two aces from Larsen to win the set to win the game 4-1.

Game 2 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-0)

Stem lead the way for game two as well, tallying another double-double with 12 kills and 16 digs. Becca Jackson followed notching 11 kills with 10 digs. Thurmond tallied 28 assists in total while Wickes notched 17 digs and four aces.

The Pioneers came into the first set hot as they found themselves an 8-3 lead early into the action. Wickes tallied two aces during this run. As the set continued, Jackson was racking up kills. As the Pioneers were trying to close out the set, the Wildcats began to shorten the gap, 20-18. However, Jackson and Gregoire rallied win the set with kills, 25-19.

The second and third sets were a similar story as the Pioneers continued to lead throughout the action.

In the third set, Jackson, Stem, and Gregoire tallied three straight kills to get an 8-5 lead. Afterwards, Alfred continued to hold the Wildcats at bay for the remainder of the set, winning it 25-20.

The final set was a show for Stem and Jackson as they tallied nine total kills. Thurmond contributed with an ace along with a Hillyard kill to take the set and win the game 3-0.

Alfred will head to Williamsport, PA next to take on Penn College on Friday, September 5th at 6pm.
