Williamsport, PA- The Alfred State volleyball team remains perfect on the year as they swept Penn College, 3-0 (25-21,25-15, 25-20). The Pioneers move to 5-0 on the season.
Gloria Stem led the Pioneer offense with 10 kills, five aces, and six digs.
Gabriella Thurmond tallied 24 assists, eight digs, and four aces.
After a back-and-forth start to the first set, the Pioneers took control after kills from
Caitlyn Gilman and
Gabriella Thurmond along with a Thurmond ace, to take a 23-18 lead. After a three-point Wildcat rally,
Alli Hillyard gave the Pioneers set point, and a well-placed service ace from
Alayna Tomlinson won the set, 25-21.
Set two saw more back move back-and-forth action to get to 15-15. From there, Alfred State went on a 10-0 run to take the set 25-15. In the third set, the Pios trailed early, before
Gloria Stem notched back-to-back aces to tie the score at 4-4. A few plays later with a score at 11-11, ASC went on a 5-0 rally. That rally included two aces and a kill for Stem, along with a
Sophia Phillips kill. Following a Penn College timeout, the Pioneers tallied kills from
Erin Gregoire,
Carmen Crowley,
Becca Jackson, Phillips, and Stem to complete the 3-0 sweep of Penn College.
The Pioneers will stay in the Williamsport area, will head over to Lycoming College tomorrow for a tri-match. The Pios will start facing Lycoming at 11 am, followed by a game against Marywood at 1 pm.
