Alfred, NY – The Alfred State men's soccer team notched their first win of the season in their home opener against The Saxons of Alfred University 2-1. After taking the non-conference win, the Pioneers are 1-0 on the season. ASC also leads the Alfred cup tournament 2-0.
Eric Spring played a crucial role for the Pioneers as he tallied the game winning goal on the day.
Alexander Preston defended the goal well as he blocked three shots while allowing one.
The first goal of the game was scored by a
Henry Leahy penalty kick in the 24
th minute. From there, the Saxons tried to answer back before the end of the half but where unable to as ASC held them off.
During the second half, both teams continued to play physical. Each side had multiple yellow cards by the 60-minute mark. The Pioneers kept their spirits high though, as they scored in the 65
th minute. The goal came off a
Jack Emo free kick and was assisted by
Andres Garces by a pass across the back to Spring for his first goal of the season.
The Saxons were able to net a goal in the 68
th minute but would ultimately fall short as ASC took the win 2-1. Their win marks new Head Coach
Vince Correa's first ever win with Pioneers.
Alfred will continue their three-game home stand as they take on Allegheny College next. Kickoff is set for Wednesday, September 3
rd at 7pm.
