PIoneers Subdue The Lions

Altoona, PA – Alfred State's baseball team notched a twin killing as they subdued the Lions in a double header (9-1, 11-2). After the wins, Alfred moves to 16-10 on the season and 3-1 in conference play.

Game 1
Ryan Bailey notched the win on the day as he was on the mound for all seven innings. Bailey totaled 15 strike outs while only allowing five hits and one run. At bat, the Pioneers saw an all-around contribution. Notably, Jordan Hughes went 1-2 while tallying three RBIs. Tyler Korsky and Devin Mersmann both scored two runs on two hits.

Getting into the action, both teams spent the first three innings at a stale mate as neither scored a run. However, the Pios found their footing in the top of fourth.

Korsky and Hughes kicked off Alfred's momentum strong as Korsky singled to left field. Hughes then followed up with a home run to right field for a double RBI, 2-0. A few pitches later, Mersmann advanced to second then third on a throwing error by the pitcher after a singled bunt. Zach Young capitalized on this opportunity and made his way to home plate. The Pioneers went on to score one more by way of a sac bunt from Connor Kiefer that gave him an RBI. Mersmann scored the unearned run.

Pios entered the fifth with a 4-0 lead. The top of the inning was short as Alfred State scored just one run before the next half of the fifth. Korsky made it on to base from a single to left center and then scored after Hughes doubled to left field. The Lions managed to score a run before the sixth on a home run.

The sixth inning is where Alfred came alive as they tallied four more runs to grab a huge lead. Anthony Snyder started the dominant inning for the Pios when he singled to the pitcher with a bunt, followed by an advance on a throwing error. This play allowed Mersmann to score his second run. Continuing from there, Kiefer was hit by a pitch and then advanced to second from a wild pitch, leading to Snyder reaching third base. With a runner at second and third, Elijah Barinas was at bat and hit a single to right field tallying an RBI from Snyder scoring, 7-1.

Later in the inning, Kiefer and Barinas went on to score two more before the bottom. The Pioneers were able to stay in front with neither team scoring in the seventh inning. Alfred took the win 9-1.

Game 2
Nathan Lucks grabbed the win on the mound in the second game, only allowing just one run. Michael Gangloff pitched for two innings allowing just one run and two hits. The Pioneers saw another all-around effort at bat in this game too. Kiefer hit 3-2 and tallied two RBIs. Hughes and Barinas both tallied two RBIs as well. Anthony went 2-1 at bat with an RBI.

The Pioneers put themselves on the board to start in the top of the first inning. Keifer, who walked to first and then advanced to second, managed to grab third and eventually steal home to give Alfred their first run of the game. This was made possible after Barinas singled through the left side that gave Kiefer the opportunity to reach third.

The second inning remained with a 1-0 lead, but the third is when the Pios picked up the pace. Snyder singled to the shortstop followed by Kiefer hitting a homer all but two plays into the inning. A couple of pitches later, Barinas singled to right field which eventually lead to him reaching second after Caleb Walker walked to first. Korsky then bunted and advanced to second on a throwing error by the pitcher, leading to a Barinas run, 4-0. The momentum did not stop there. Hughes singled and tallied two RBIs from Korsky and Walker finding home plate. The final run for the entirety of the third inning came from Hughes advancing to second and third off of wild pitches. Hughes then capitalized off of Young grounding out to the short stop, 7-1.

The fourth, fifth, and sixth innings kept the same score as neither team managed to touch home plate. Nevertheless, Alfred began to tie the knot in the 7th inning. Kiefer advanced to first on a walk while Snyder advanced to second after a hit by pitch. Young was also on third after he kicked off the inning on a walk. With the bases loaded, Barinas singled to the left side leading to Snyder and Young notching a run each. Afterwards, Kiefer scored from a Walker single.

The Lions tacked on one more run in the eighth. However, Mersmann added one more run in the ninth to seal the deal. Mersmann tripled to left field and then scored off of Snyder's ground out to third base. The Pioneers won 11-2.

Pios will return home on Wednesday, April 9th for a double header against Pitt-Brad.
