ASC Stomps Lions

Erie, PA- The Alfred State baseball team made a clean sweep against the Lions in there double head conference matchup 4-3 and 11-4. After today, Pios move to 23-13 on the season and 10-4 in conference play.

Game 1 (4-3)

Ryan Bailey set the tone on the mound for Alfred pitching all seven innings while only allowing two runs on five hits. Bailey tallied the win while retiring four batters.

At bat, Connor Kiefer, Elijah Barinas, and Zach Young all tallied an RBI.

The first two innings remained a stalemate for both sides as both went scoreless.

In the third, the Lions were the ones to pick up the base as they got out to a 3-0 lead at the bottom of the inning.

The top of the fourth inning is where the Pioneers answered back. Jordan Hughes notched single to become the first runner on base. Caleb Walker followed up with a walk. Young then smacked a single down the right line for an RBI. Right after, Walker scored on an error for the 2-0 lead.

In the top of the sixth, Pios swung the momentum back their way as they took lead of just one. Young batted a single to center field to put a runner on base. Two batters later, Anthony Snyder reached first of a hit by pitch. He later took second from an error by the Lion's pitcher. From there, Kiefer notched an RBI single off a bunt to level the score 3-3. Barnas then put the Pioneers ahead with a sac fly to right field.

Pios were able to hold off the Lions for the rest of the sixth and seventh inning, taking the first  game 4-3.

Game 2 (11-4)

Christopher Mattoon logged the victory on the mound in the second game throwing for all nine innings. Mattoon retired four hitters and only allowed four runs.

At the plate, Anthony Snyder notched three RBIs while hitting 2-4. Frank Grad and Tyler Korsky notches two RBIs as well.

Getting into the action, Pios took control early in the game as they took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Barinas was walked to become the first runner on base. Grad followed after being hit by the pitcher. Korsky capitalized off the opportunity by hitting a two RBI double to left field for the score. Young topped it all off when he singled down the left line for an RBI two batters later.

The score remained unchanged until the fourth inning. There, Mersmann walked to put runners on base. Walker notched a single through the right side shortly after. From there, Snyder advanced both runners home with a double down the right line. A batter later, Kiefer was hit by the pitch and Barinas reached first off a single. With the bases loaded, Grad notched an RBI off a sac fly. After an out, Kiefer would score on an error, and a few pitches later, Barinas would score on a double steal to make it an 8-0 game.

The Lions scored two runs in fifth, and the Pioneers answered with three runs in the sixth. Walker led off with a double down the right field line and came around to score on an RBI single from Snyder. A bunt single from Kiefer, Snyder moved over to second and scored on an error to make it a 10-1 game. An RBI single from Grad gave the Pioneers a 11-3 lead.

The Lions tried to rally in the ninth by scoring one run but couldn't get any closer as the Pios wont it 11-4. Pios will face off against St. John Fisher next on Thursday, May 1st at 4:15pm.
