Alfred, NY – The Alfred State baseball team notched sweep on senior day against the Redhawks (4-3, 11-9). After the sweep, Pios move to 22-13 on the season.
Game 1 (4-3)
In game one,
Jordan Hughes took the win while he pitched five innings. Hughes allowed just two runs on eight hits and tallied five strikeouts.
Michael Gangloff pitched .2 innings on the mound and notched the save.
At the plate,
Frank Grad went 2-3 and tallied an RBI.
Tyler Korsky hit 1-3 and tallied a triple with an RBI as well.
Getting into the action, Pios took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Connor Kiefer notched a single to left center, then went to second off a wild pitch. Two batters later, Grad notched a single to left center for an RBI. Immediately after, Korsky hit an RBI triple to right field, and then scored off a throwing error by the second basemen for the 3-0 lead.
After a scoreless second inning from both sides, Pios found another score in the third inning. With two outs Hughes notched a double towards centerfield. He then made his way to third after a wild pitch.
Zach Young advanced Hughes with an RBI single through the left side.
The game began to get closer as the Redhawks scored a run in the fourth, fifth, and seventh inning, 4-3.
With the game being close at the top of the seventh, the Pioneers were able to rally together as they held off the Redhawks to take the first game 4-3.
Game 2 (11-9)
On the mound for the second game,
Zachary Nelson took the win while pitching for 7.1 innings and tallying a strikeout. Gangloff notched the save as he threw for two strikeouts while allowing just two runs on three hits.
At bat, Young hit 1-2 and tallied two RBI's. Hughes also notched two RBIs on 2-5 hitting.
After a scoreless first inning for both teams, Alfred ended up being the ones to pick up the pace. In the bottom of the second, Korsky led off for the Pioneers. After Korsky's walk, Hughes hit an RBI double to left center. Right after,
Caleb Walker grounded out for a sac bunt that gave Hughes third base. Hughes then made his way home after Young reached on a fielding error for the 2-0 lead.
Devin Mersmann batted next where he tallied an RBI double to left field. After Mersmann made it to third on a wild pitch,
Anthony Snyder followed with a ground out to third base giving him an RBI.
In the third inning, the Pios put two more runs on the board.
Elijah Barinas led off the inning with a hit by pitch. He then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Later, after a Grad walk, Barinas scored on a wild pitch while Grad took third base. Two batters later, Walker notched an RBI after he reached first on a fielding error.
In the fourth inning, LaRoche tacked on a run but the Pioneers were able to answer back at the bottom of the inning. With two outs Kiefer hit a homer to left field, 7-1.
The fifth inning was the exact same as both teams matched one another scoring just one run. This time, Korsky led off with a double to left center. Young tallied the RBI when he singled through the left side for an 8-2 margin.
The Redhawks put up two more in the sixth. Kiefer led off the bottom of the sixth when he notched a single up the middle and then scored on an error by the catcher, 9-4.
Alfred entered the ninth inning looking to hold off the Redhawks as they tallied three runs in the eighth. With the game being so close, LaRoche scored two more runs at the top of the inning. However, Pios were able to hold them off to take the game 11-9.
Pios will head to Erie, PA for a doubleheader against Penn State Behrend. The game is set to begin on Tuesday, Aprile 29 at 1pm.
