ALFRED N.Y.- The Pioneers opened the doubleheader against the Hilbert Hawks with a 10-5 victory and closed with a 9-8 win. After the sweep, Pios move to 8-16 on the season.
Game 1 (10-5)
In game 1,
Abby Beidel took the circle for the Pioneers. She pitched six innings giving up only four earned runs and tallied four strikeouts on the day. She was credited with the win for the Pioneers.
Hailee Smith closed the door, throwing one inning for the Pioneers giving up no runs or hits while also tallying a strikeout.
The second baseman
McKinlee Harris lead the way for the Pioneers going 2-3 with three RBIs. Right behind her was Carley Larsen who went 1-4 with two RBIs and
Abigail Marinelli added two RBIs on a 1-3 day at the plate for the Pioneers.
The Hawks struck first in the top of the 1
st with one run. In the bottom of the 2
d inning the Pioneers were able to respond to the Hawks.
Nicole Youngberg led off the inning with a double to left center. After
Madigan Harris grounded out,
McKinlee Harris walked to first, then stole second.
Abigail Marinelli followed with a two RBI double to centerfield, 2-1.
In the top of the 3
rd, the Hawks put two more runs on the board. Alfred then answered with three more runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Trinity Scott notched a single up the middle. Two batters later,
Youngberg singled to right field. Afterwards, Ma. Harris walked to first. With the bases loaded, all three runners advanced on a wild pitch, 3-1. Following from there Mc. Harris notched a two RBI single.
In the top of the 5
th the Hawks added another run. In the bottom of the 5
th the Pios scored a run of their own. The run was scored by Ma. Harris who reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning. The run was made possible by a single by Mc. Harris.
Alfred State put up four runs in the bottom of the 6
th inning giving them a comfortable 10-4 lead into the top of the 7th inning. Hilbert was able score one run in the top of the 7
th before the Pioneers would go on to win 10-5.
Game 2 (9-8)
In game 2
Marissa Ordway took the circle for the Pioneers, she pitched 4.2 innings and only allowed two earned runs while also tallying four strikeouts.
Hailee Smith came in for relief, she pitched 3.1 innings giving up no earned runs and securing the win.
Caley Larsen led the way for the Pioneers in game two, she tallied two hits along with 2 RBIs.
Trinity Scott had the most runs scored in the game for the Pioneers with three runs also adding two more hits on the day.
The first two innings remained scoreless for both teams.The Pioneers were able to strike first in the 3
rd inning. Three batters in, Scott doubled to left field. Larsen followed up with an RBI single up the middle.
Mc. Harris led off with a single to right field followed by a second base swipe. Mc. Harris advanced to third on an unassisted groundout by
Abigail Marinelli.
Liana Dion hit a sacrifice fly into centerfield to score Mc. Harris to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead.
The Hawks exploded 5
th inning with six runs, putting immense pressure on the Pioneers. The Pioneers were able to respond three runs of their own.
Nicole Youngberg started the scoring by hitting a single into centerfield scoring
Amy Campbell who led off the inning with a single into left center. The Pioneers scored two on an error to make it a 6-5 game.
After a scoreless 6
th inning, the Pioneers were able to tie the game at 6-6 in the 7
th. Scott lead off with a single towards the shortstop. Two batters later Youngberg followed the walk. After a pitching change, Scott was able to score to send it to extras.
The Hawks scored two in the top of inning. The Pioneers were able to get three runs across. After Mc. Harris was place on second, Marinelli notched an RBI triple to right field to make it an 8-7 game. Dion followed with a single towards second base, then Millard got walked to load the bases. Marinelli was able to score on a wild pitch to make it 8-8. After Scott got walked to load the bases again, Larsen walked off
the game with an RBI sacrifice fly.
The Pioneers will be on the road as they take on La Roche April 27.
