Pioneers Take Game Two In Double Header Against Hawks

Alfred, NY – Alfred State baseball split the day in their double header against the Hilbert Hawks (3-2, 14-2). After today's matchup, Pios move to 20-13 on the season.

Game 2 (14-2)
On the mound, Christopher Mattoon took the win in the second game. He pitched for six total innings while only allowing two runs on four hits. Mattoon also tallied four strikeouts.

At the plate, Anthony Snyder led the way going 3-3 with a double and five RBI's an. Frank Grad went 2-5 and tallied a run along with three RBIs. Elijah Barinas also had a good game as he went 3-4 with two RBIs.

At the top of the first inning, Alfred scored first. Barinas tallied a single to center field. Two batters later, Tyler Korsky tallied a RBI center for a 1-0 lead.

The Hawks tied the game in the bottom of the first. Nevertheless, Alfred answered back in the second. After back-to-back walks, Devin Mersmann reached on first from a fielder's choice that put runners in the corner. A few pitches later, Mersmann stole second. After that, Snyder put out a two RBI single to center field, 3-1. After a pitcher change, Barinas singled and then advanced to second for a Snyder score, 4-1.

 Alfred's momentum continued into the third as they scored five more runs before the fourth. With one out, Hughes notched a single towards third base. Two batters later, Young tallied an RBI single to center field. Immediately after, Mersmann notched a single to the third basemen. Snyder batted next where he went on to hit a two RBI double. Afterwards, Kiefer singled to the shortstop. Following a pitching change from the Hawks, Kiefer took second base after a wild pitch. Barinas later entered to bat where he notched single to center field tallying two RBIs, 9-1.

The Pioneers kept a 9-1 margin throughout the fourth and into the fifth inning. There, Alfred tacked on three more. Snyder was on second after Kiefer got walked to first. From there, Grad hit a three-run homer to right field 12-9.
In the sixth inning, the Pios put the game further out of reach. After being hit by the pitch, Hughes was on first. Two batters later, Tyler Kaelin pinched hit for Hughes and got talked to first. Following from there, Mersmann stepped up and notched an RBI from a double to right field. Snyder batted next where he notched an RBI sac fly, 14-1. In the bottom of the inning, the Hawks tacked on one run.

Alfred spent the last inning keeping the Hawks away as they took game two 14-2.

Game 1 (3-2)

Game one was a battle between both teams as it was low scoring affair. Ryan Bailey took the loss after he pitched 6.2 innings. Bailey allowed only three runs on seven hits and tallied 11 strikeouts.'
  
At bat, Hughes notched two RBIs.

In the first inning, the Pios started off strong by taking a 2-0 lead early on. After Barinas reached first on an error, Grad batted next. Grad was then hit by the pitcher. Two batters later, Hughes notched a double RBI single to center field.
The Pioneers then spent the following three innings trying to maintain their lead as neither team could find momentum. In the bottom of the fifth, the Hawks managed to score two runs which tied the game 2-2.

After a scoreless sixth inning, the Hawks were able to hold the Pioneers off. They tallied a walk off single to win the game 3-2.

Alfred will be home to face off against La Roche. The double head will begin on Sunday, April 26th at 1pm.
