Pioneers Able To Keep Hobart At Bay

Geneva, NY – The Alfred State baseball team took a win on the road against Hobart 15-12. After winning, Alfred moves to 19-12 on the season.

Daniel Lewis took the win on the day while spending three innings on the mound. During that time, he allowed four runs on five hits and threw two strikeouts. Spencer Riehler pitched in two total innings, throwing two strike outs. At bat, Connor Kiefer led the way scoring three runs on two hits along with an RBI. Caleb Walker scored three runs as well. Frank Grad played a huge role too as he tallied three RBIs on 1-2 hitting.

The Pioneers found themselves on the board early in the game after scoring a run just three pitches in. It started with Kiefer and Barinas each hitting a single consecutively.  Grad then bunted to the pitcher. While the bunt happened Kiefer advanced to third and then scored off a pitcher throwing error. Barinas was then on third from the error also. Afterwards, Korsky grounded into a double play that took Grad out on the play while at the same time allowing Barinas to notch another run, 2-0.

The second inning was slow for both teams, but the third is where action began. The Pios were down 2-5 at the top of third inning. However, that quickly changed. What would turn out to be Alfred scoring seven runs, started with Kiefer walking to first base. Barinas singled to right field after that. Then he advanced to second base while Kiefer reached third on a wild pitch. Following these events, Grad stepped up to bat and tallied two RBIs with a single up the middle.

Later, Korsky walked to first. After Jordan Hughes struck out swinging, Korsky then made it to second and Grad to third from a wild pitch. With both runners at second and third, Zach Young made the most of the opportunity when he singled for two RBIs, 6-5. The Pioneers then put the game further out of reach when they scored off the mistakes made by Hobart. Young scored an unearned run of a passed ball and Walker scored after being walked to first.

The Pios continued to maintain their winning margin as they only allowed one more run from Hobart heading into the top of the fifth inning. In the fifth, Pios tacked on four more runs. Once again Alfred took advantage of mistakes made by the opposing team. Zach Young walked to first, and then Jonny Nadolski pinch ran for him. Walker then made it to first after being hit by the pitch. Immediately after, Mersmann SAC bunted but reached base on a throwing error by the pitcher. While that happened, Walker and Nadolski scored. Mersmann later scored an unearned run after the error while Kiefer swung a double, 12-6.  Kiefer then tacked on one more to close out the inning.

In the next inning, Tyler Kaelin scored without any batter ever hitting the ball. He reached first on an error, then stole second. After that, Kaelin ran to third on a wild pitch. Finally, Kaelin made his way home off a throwing error by the catcher. Walker scored in a similar manner as he made it to second from a walk and a wild pitch. Later, James Camach grounded out for the RBI.

In the seventh, eighth, and ninth inning, the Pios fought to maintain their huge gap over Hobart. They were indeed successful as they only allowed one more run and took the victory 15-12.

Alfred's next game will be in Hamburg, NY to face off against the Hilbert Hawks. The double header will begin on Thursday, April 24 at 1pm.
