Greensburg, PA- The Alfred State baseball team split their double header matchup against the Bobcats (6-5, 10-5). After the double header, Pios move to 18-12 on the season.
Game 2
In game 2, Chirstopher Mattoon grabbed the win as he spent 7 innings on the mound. He threw five strike outs and allowed five runs on ten hits. At bat, Kiefer went 2-3 and tallied three RBIs. Behind him, Korsky tallied 2 RBIs and along with Snyder who hit 2-2.
The first inning was scoreless for both teams, but Alfred got themselves going first in the second inning. Young hit a double to left field to get himself on base. After Mersmann singled to left field, Snyder flied out to left field for an RBI. Young made his way to home.
In the second inning, the Pioneers were down 2-1. Kiefer tied it all up on the first pitch at the top of the inning as he homered. Following that, Kiefer scored an unearned run after he reached first on an error by the third basemen and then scored after Korsky doubled. The Bobcats ended up scoring at the bottom of the second.
Both teams remained at a stalemate the entirety of the fourth. However, in the fifth is where Alfred caught momentum again. The Pios went on to score two more runs at the top of the fifth. Grad and Barinas were the ones responsible. Barinas scored after he advanced to third from Grad's advancement to second on a wild pitch. Barinas then made it home from Korsky flying out to left field. Grad later scored from Tre Lawson's single to left field that gave him an RBI, 5-2.
Pios then went on to put the game further out of reach in the top of the seventh when they scored four runs. Younge kicked it off when he doubled to center field to get himself on base. A short while later, he then scored a run from Snyder singling. Snyder went on to advance to second on a throw and then scored from Kiefer hitting to left field. Kiefer scored an unearned run and Barinas scored as well, 9-4.
Pios closed out the game after Snyder and Kiefer both hit a double respectively in the ninth. Snyder's run brought the margin to 10-5 for an Alfred State win.
Game 1
In the first game,
Ryan Bailey spent six innings on the mound. During this time, Bailey threw for five strikeouts and allowed five runs in eight hits. At bat,
Connor Kiefer went 1-2 and tallied an RBI as well.
Elijah Barinas,
Frank Grad,
Jordan Hughes, and
Zach Younge all tallied one RBI also.
Getting into the action, the two innings were a slow start for both teams as they remained scoreless. In the top of the third, Alfed was the first to put a run on the board.
Devin Mersmann reached first on an error by the catcher and then stole second. Mersman then reached third off an
Anthony Snyder SAC bunt to the pitcher. After that,
Connor Kiefer grounded out with a SAC bunt that gave him an RBI from Mersmann reaching home plate.
The fourth inning was scoreless for the Pioneers, but the Bobcats managed to score a run.
In the fifth, the Pioneers lost some of their momentum and saw themselves down by four runs heading into the sixth, 5-1. At the top of the sixth, Pios saw a bit of a spark as Korsky hit a single to centerfield followed by a Hughes double that led to him scoring, 5-2.
The seventh was a nail biter. Alfred grabbed a huge spark of momentum and scored three runs consecutively. It all started with Snyder's single which then saw Johnny Nadolski pinch run for him. Nadolski then advanced to second from a wild pitch, and then to third after Kiefer singled. To continue, Barinas then singled and advanced to second on a throw. During that moment, Kiefer made his way to third while Nadolski scored. Kiefer then scored from a Grad SAC to give him an RBI. Korsky then walked to first and advanced to second after Hughes walked. Young then singled to lead Barinas to home plate, 5-5.
With it all tied up, Korsky got caught stealing to close off the top of the 7
th. Despite the comeback in the top of the 7
th, the Bobcats scored a run at the bottom to close out the game. The Pioneers fell 6-5.
Pios will head to Geneva, NY next to face off against Hobart College. The game is set to begin on Tuesday, Aprill 22 at 6pm.
