Strong Middle Innings Propel Pios To Win Over The Tigers

Rochester, NY- The Alfred State baseball team picks up a midweek victory over RIT, 14-3. The Pioneers move to 14-9 on the season.

Jordan Hughes picked up the win on the mound, as he pitched 8.0 inning only allowing two unearned runs on three hits with eight strikeouts. Connor Kiefer led the way at the plate as he went 2-3 with a double and four RBIs. Caleb Walker went 2-5 with three RBIs. Elijah Barinas, Tyler Korsky, Zach Young, and Anthony Synder all tallied a double each.

After two scoreless innings, Devin Mersmann got the Pioneers on the board first after scoring on a wild pitch.  Then after getting the bases loaded, Caleb Walker got walked for an RBI and the 2-0 lead. The Pioneers would score on a groundout to make it a 3-0 game.

RIT responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 3-2 game.  Alfred State would score one run in the fifth from a Walker RBI single to push their lead to 4-2.

Then in the sixth, ASC put three more runs on the board. With one out, Zach Young got walked. Sean Connor followed with a single to center field, and Mersmann got hit by a pitched to load the bases. Connor Kiefer then stepped to the plate and put in a three RBI double through the left side for the 7-2 lead.

In the next Pioneer at-bat, with one out Tyler Korsky notched a double to center field. He would come around to score on an error. Young followed with an RBI double to make it a 9-2 game. After a Connor single put runners on the corners, Mersmann got in an RBI on a fielder choice to make it a 10-2 game.

In the top of the eighth, the Pios added on two more runs. After back-to-back walks from Elijah Barinas and Kiefer, Korsky put in a two RBI single for the 12-2 lead.  Then in the ninth, with two outs, Anthony Snyder notched double to left center. Kiefer followed with an RBI single to right field for the 13-2 lead. After a Barinas single, Walker notched an RBI single to right field for the 14-2 lead.

ASC was able to hold off the RIT offense to get the 14-3 win. The Pioneers will be back on the road tomorrow for a game against SUNY Oswego with first pitch scheduled for 1 pm.
