Pioneers Split The Day Against The Mounties

Bolivar, NY- The Alfred State baseball team split the day against the Mounties, in the first game the Pios won 11-0, then dropped game two 18-10. After todays doubleheader, the Pioneers move to 13-9 on the season and 1-1 in conference play. 

Game 1

Ryan Bailey pitched a complete game shutout, as he pitched 7.0 innings allowing no runs on two hits with 10 strikeouts. At the plate, Zach Young went 2-3 with a double and four RBIs. Jordan Hughes went 2-3 with a double and three RBIs. Connor Kiefer went 1-3 with his lone hit being an RBI triple. 

After two scoreless innings, The Pioneers got one run on the board. Anthony Snyder led off the inning with a single through the left side. Kiefer followed with his RBI triple to left center for the 1-0 lead.

In the fourth, Tyler Korsky and Jordan Hughes got walked to lead off the inning. Then Young followed with a two RBI double to right center to give ASC the 3-0 lead. 
In the next Pioneer at-bat, Alfred scored three runs to get the 6-0 lead. With the bases loaded and one out, Hughes put in a two RBI single to right field for the 5-0 lead. After a pitching change, Young gave the Pios a 6-0 lead on an RBI sacrifice fly. 

Then in the bottom of the sixth, Alfred extended their lead to 11-0  after getting five runs across. Devin Mersmann got hip by a pitch to lead off the inning, then stole second a few pitches later. Three batters later, Elijah Barinas got walked and Caleb Walker followed with a two RBI single for the 8-0 lead. Korsky followed with an RBI single up the middle. Then Hughes put in an RBI double to right field for the 10-0 lead. Young then followed with an RBI single to center field to make it an 11-0 lead. 

The Pioneers would continue to hold the Mounties scoreless in the top of the seventh to get the 11-0 win. 

Game 2

In the second game, Spencer Riehler took the loss on the mound.  At the plate, Kiefer went 1-2 with four RBIs while Young tallied one RBI hitting while batting 3-3. 

The first two innings was a slow start for the Pios as they entered the top of the third with a 6-2 deficit. The deuce on the board for Alfred came off a Kiefer two RBI single up the middle that resulted in Mersmann and Young crossing home plate. 

The Pioneers saw the momentum shift that they were looking for in the third. After giving up just one run to the Mounties, Alfred went on to score seven runs in the bottom of the inning. With two on and one out, Young sparked the rally for the team as he hit an RBI single to left center giving Walker the opening to reach home. Immediately after, Korsky advanced to home as Frank Grad singled to right center. A few runs later, Barinas hit a sac fly that James Camacho scored from. The inning ended with a score of 9-7, Pios lead. 

The Pios remained scoreless for the next couple of innings while the Mounties grabbed a large lead 17-9 entering into the seventh inning. In the bottom of the seventh, Gavin Lasko pitch hit and tallied an RBI from a sac fly that advanced Young to home. 

The Pioneers fought for the rest of the game to get back in it but were unable to cut the deficit as they fell 18-10. The Pios will hit the road to face off against Oswego for a double header set to begin on Tuesday April 1st at 1pm.
