Chestertown, MD- The Alfred State Baseball team split their Saturday doubleheader against the Washington College Shoremen, a game one win 14-7 and a game two loss 8-7.
Zachary Nelson took home the win in game one as he came in as the third pitcher of the game. Game one also saw
Ryan Bailey start on the mound and
Michael Gangloff come in as a relief.
Jordan Hughes knocked two homeruns out of the park to which
Caleb Walker would also assist with his own homer as well.
Tyler Korsky also went 4-6 at the plate in game one, coming up big for the Pioneers with two RBI and two doubles.
After a scoreless inning and a half, the Shoremen grabbed the first three runs of the game in the bottom of the second. After the Pios were unable to tack on anything in the top of the third, Washington College notched one more run, 4-0 bottom of the third.
Three scoreless innings by both teams, the Pioneers finally found the intensity they were looking for. Korsky would start out the seventh inning by singling to center, which Hughes was quick to respond with his first homer of the day.
Zach Young would continue the rally and single to center to which
Gavin Lasko would double to right center, scoring Young. The Pios notched four important runs, tying the game 4-4.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Shoremen tallied three more runs as they take the lead 7-4. ASC retaliated in the top of the nineth inning, matching Washington and tacking on three runs, tying the game back up for a second time, 7-7.
The Pioneers secured the game in the top of the tenth inning as they went on a seven-run rally. Walker and Hughes both homered this inning, Walker grabbing 3 RBI and Hughes notching a 2 RBI. The Pios took home game ones win 14-7.
In game two,
Christopher Mattoon started on the mound for the Pios. Gangloff and
Daniel Lewis also stepped in, Lewis taking the loss for the second game.
To start the second game off strong, ASC notched one run that started by
Elijah Barinas singling to center, advancing
Connor Kiefer to third. Walker scored Kiefer on an RBI fielders' choice to second base. The Shoremen were able to grab two runs in the bottom of the second inning, putting them up 2-1.
Top of the fourth, the Pios notched two runs initiated by a Walker double down the right field line. Hughes would crank his third home run of the day, scoring Walker, 3-2 ASC.
Both teams held each other scoreless for three innings, until the Pios notched a run in the top of the seventh.
Frank Grad started the fire for them, singling to right center. Barinas would smack a triple to right field to score Grad. In the eighth, ASC would grab three more runs putting them up 7-2. Washington would then decrease the Pios lead by notching two runs.
The Shoremen managed to tie the game up in the bottom of the nineth, 7-7. Washington was able to grab the winning run in the bottom of the 10
th inning, securing the win.
The Pioneers will play one more game against the Shoremen tomorrow at 12 pm.
